Flower power
Last night, we got into yet another discussion about whether it's okay for men to like flowers. Seems to be a perennial issue in our household. It all started several months ago when I made a passing comment that I thought it was unfair that flowers are given to women and not to men. Why shouldn’t men appreciate exquisite beauty that God has made? (In fact, it’s just occurred to me that since men are generally built to appreciate women’s beauty, perhaps it is more suitable for them to like flowers?!)
Anyway, it got me into trouble, particularly with one young White Stone disciple: she insists that it is totally unthinkable for men to like flowers… in fact she gets almost hysterical about the subject. (‘Plants, yes, but flowers?!..’)
What do you think then? Cast your vote! Is it acceptable for men to like flowers – even enough to want to be given them?

Not really - the thought of it gets right up my nose.
Flowers are evil pollen spreaders creating misery for millions worldwide in summer.
They are good for eating however (rose turkish delight, orange & geranium chocolate etc)
I think it's silly to say that men can't even appreiciate looking at flowers...but i can understand why it might be seen as strange to give them. I have given flowers to men that i know really enjoy them...and will do again!
Surely this whole debate is about stereotyping. So if men can't enjoy flowers, why should women enjoy football, driving, going to the pub???? If you're going to be sexist about flowers then you have to follow the same line of reason to it's logical conclusions...and i'm sure the white stone sister who started all this would react just as violently to that!
flowers for men are fine if you ask me.
well i think that it is ok for them to like flowers as god made them and everyone should be allowed to exsperience gods beauty
Further to my earlier comment I must admit I do enjoy watching Bees going about their business landing on the flowers and harvesting the pollen. But the flowers themselves I am not too fussed about, I find Gods creations such as the animals and insects more interesting (not just because I like eating them Darren) than the flowers and plants.
well what a can of worms to open
i have to say I have frequently given flowers to men in my life in the past and i have no problem with it
infact I remeber fondly one mans reaction it was really quite beautiful as he wept becasue he loved flowers but thought it to weak to admit it and so was well blessed that he had been given
i do get frustrated by sterotyping I do beleive that it is unecessary yes there are clear reasons for male/female guidleins/roles/boundires but that is different to sterotyping
oh bethan... your logic is flawed in so many ways. you carry on believing you're right if that makes you feel better!lol! One day you might realise that knowing a man who can express his emotions in a range of different ways is a very beautiful thing... i hope you do.
Ain't it sad that the world has to put people in boxes to the extent that they can't enjoy simple things like flowers!
If a guy likes flowers then fine, think it's cool. It's not unmanly for a guy to like flowers anymore than it is ungirly for a gal to like F! and rugger
; ) The TJ
bethan i have to ask yoiu if you think that is is ok for a girl to play footie or rugby or paint a wall or put up shelves????
if you answer is yes then yoiu ahve to see that men are entitled to be diverse in who they are
I have tried to teach my sons that it is ok to enjoy all areas of life ..... will used to love to push a doll around in a buggy when he was little (ok when you ahve stopped laughing i know that he will kill me) but what i wanted to say is that parents sterotype their kids at such an early age and we ahve a duty to show diversity and emotion
Personally I don't mind, I would probably prefer something else but if I was given flowers I can't say I would complain about it.
I wonder if the Bride of Christ is going to carry a bouquet? Men are part of the Bride - so if she is maybe they betta get used to handling them now.
Personally I think flowers r betta in the garden growing as God created them (well sort of anyway) but that's just personal
Will, will never live this down! i do see where you coming from but its not the same in my head for example its like a man wearing at extra frilly petty coat its not done is it its just wrong! you are not going to see my point and your not going to pursweade me either so we may as well end this argument and agree to disagree. but james please dont tease me!
All men should like flowers.
If they don't, you'll need to look out for suppressed character traits which are perceived to be too feminine in nature - but have got nothing at all to do with being like a woman.
We may see a brother in denial...
Doesn't mean you have to start reading maps the wrong way up or wearing tights does it?
Sorry, still wouldn't get much out of receiving flowers. It wouldn't be as bad as getting a pair of socks on my birthday but it I'm not a flowers in my hair kind of person.
As presents go it would be okay, but it just wouldn't be anything special.
Flowers are great in context ie. nature.
Darren
Couldn't agree with you more. Frilly petty coats are great for us blokes to relax in, especially mine with flourescent pink colours and real flowers sewn in and an automatic perfume spray. Just perfect.
Now where did I leave my lipstick...
I agree with Tschaka, I wouldn't like to get flowers for a gift, and I'm a girl. Give me chocolate any day.
If a bloke gave me flowers I'd quietly think he was a bit of a wierdo.
If a woman gave me flowers I'd thank her kindly and then leave them to wither in my room. Not to be vindictive; that's what flowers do, isn't it?
But if I gave James some flowers, I'd cope with quietly thinking I was a wierdo for the sake of the wonder it would create in him, and for the sake of the annoyance it would cause Bethan.
I don't know what the fuss is about all these flowers - we should burn the lot of them and adrian when are going to return my pink frilly coat, they go with my pink fluffy slippers and by the way I have your lipstick!
LOL
now you guys know how much i love pink..... but even i draw the line at pink filly petticoats comeone chaps where is your style..
i would like to be given flowers!
(though i would probably kill them in the first week!)
